Individual therapy is geared toward helping a person to manage change and feel better about life. Individual therapy is used primarily for the treatment of specific mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It can also be employed to treat other challenges or issues in a personal relationship to deal with difficulties in a job, and to explore and manage life and career choices.


Therapeutic interventions are typically structured and administered in group sessions. The therapy session usually takes place in a group setting or in an individual's private room. Therapists use various methods, including:

Direct feedback - The therapist's direct feedback of the client's attention, gestures, body language, emotions, and the like will help the client make good decisions about the things that affect his/her life. The client should receive constant feedback on the way in which he/she is responding to situations. This feedback should also be given in a manner that does not undermine the client's self-confidence. Some therapists will not give their clients' feedback directly but rather provide suggestions and comments in order to assist them in making better choices. Feedback and suggestions are also helpful to the client in helping him/her achieve desired goals.

Interventions - The first task of the therapist is to set a meeting with the client. This will allow the client to know the therapist and the process. This will also allow the client to know what kind of information and what he/she is expected to do while being treated. The therapist may also provide the client with an agenda for the therapy session. An agenda gives the client a chance to plan what he/she will be working on at the given time. This enables the client to focus on the work ahead of him/her and helps him/her to focus on the task at hand.

Treatment is usually ongoing. A client may need additional treatments if the initial one does not bring significant improvement. A therapist may decide to stop giving individual therapy once the client has reached the point where the therapy has brought the desired results. In some cases, the therapist may require that the client see a psychologist to address specific problems. Or issues that may arise as the therapy continues. In other cases, the therapist may suggest that the client continue with individual therapy until all areas of treatment have been addressed.


There are many types of individuals who could benefit from individual therapy. People of all ages can benefit, from children to the elderly. Individuals who suffer from social, emotional, and mental illnesses or those whose lives seem to be headed in the wrong direction might benefit from this type of therapy.
